Old
Glory Patriotic
1899 DECEMBER
12: MANILA to CALIFORNIA
Beautiful
U.S. Flag patriotic card bearing 2c "PHILIPPINES" overprint
cancelled
with MIL. STA. No. 1 MANILA / PHIL. ISLD'D. duplex.
Imprint at
the card bottom read "ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF THE PARLIAMENT OF CANADA
IN THE YEAR 1898 BY J. C. WILSON & CO. MONTREAL. AT THE DEPARTMENT
OF AGRICULTURE".
And on verso,
part of the message reads ""AGGIE STILL AT LARGE...." (reference to Emilio
Aguinaldo).
The bottom
card imprint tells me that this card was manufactured in Canada and the
"Act of Parliament of Canada" is similar to the "Act of Congress" found
on U.S. private mailing cards which gave authority to the privately printed
cards to pass through the mail system at half the rate charged on post
office issued postal cards. |
